Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadeq, President of Cairo University, attended the ceremony for the international accreditation of the Cytogenetics and Immunology laboratories at the Clinical Pathology Department of the National Cancer Institute, and the presentation of their international accreditation certificates from the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) in accordance with the ISO 15189:2022 standard, valid for three years.

The event was held during a grand celebration at the institute’s conference hall, in the presence of distinguished leaders from the university and the medical sector.

Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadeq affirmed that the international accreditation of the two laboratories reflects Cairo University’s commitment to the highest standards of quality and technical competence in medical and laboratory services. He noted that this achievement will contribute to improving diagnostic accuracy and increasing recovery rates for cancer patients. It also demonstrates the university’s full support for its faculties, institutes, and centers to achieve more international accreditations and reach the highest global standards, in line with its vision and strategy for leadership and excellence. The University President praised the efforts of the National Cancer Institute’s team and the support provided by the Ministry of Higher Education through projects aimed at developing and qualifying laboratories, which strengthens the university’s research and service infrastructure.

For his part, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Moaty Samra, Dean of the National Cancer Institute, stated that international accreditation helps improve the institute’s and the university’s global ranking and enhances their ability to provide advanced medical and laboratory services. He pointed out that the institute houses some of the most sophisticated laboratories in the Middle East and serves around 32,000 new patients annually using state-of-the-art technologies, including artificial intelligence. He also mentioned that the 500500 Hospital will include central laboratories that rank among the best worldwide.

In his remarks, Dr. Ahmed Mounir El-Sabbagh, Executive Director of the Higher Education Development Projects Management Unit, praised Cairo University’s long-standing history and leading role in the medical sector, commending the fruitful collaboration between the university and the National Cancer Institute in implementing service and research projects.

Meanwhile, Eng. Hany El-Dessouky, Executive Director of the Egyptian Accreditation Council, highlighted that the council has accredited 1,050 entities inside and outside Egypt so far, and that the institute’s accreditation makes it recognized in 116 countries worldwide.

Dr. Osama Galal Sakr, Director of the Laboratory Accreditation Project, emphasized that this achievement represents an important step within a comprehensive plan to accredit the laboratories of various university faculties, thereby increasing the added value and improving services provided to patients.

Dr. Nahed Abdel-Wahab, Head of the Clinical Pathology Department, stressed that the two laboratories conduct highly accurate tests for leukemia patients, including the identification of genetic mutations and guiding treatment pathways. Dr. Basma El-Gammal, Executive Director of the Cytogenetics Laboratory, explained that the lab provides free services to more than 2,000 patients annually and helps reduce the time required for examinations, which accelerates the initiation of treatment and improves recovery prospects, in addition to serving as a training center for medical professionals.

During the celebration, the University President honored several institute leaders in recognition of their efforts. He also toured the Cytogenetics and Immunology laboratories, the Bone Marrow Aspiration Lab, and the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and inaugurated the Clinical Research Center at the institute’s southern building, named after Prof. Rabab Gaafar.
