Press Release from the General Authority for Healthcare
The General Authority for Healthcare announced the successful accreditation of El Shifa Medical Complex Laboratory in Port Said Governorate according to the latest international standard ISO 15189, granted by the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC)—an internationally recognized accreditation body. This milestone marks the first time Port Said hosts a medical laboratory accredited internationally under the most recent laboratory quality standard.
This laboratory is now the second facility within the Authority’s network—and the second nationwide—to achieve this prestigious accreditation under the updated ISO 15189:2022 standard, reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to implementing the highest global quality standards in healthcare delivery and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of diagnostic services.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare, emphasized that this accreditation reflects the Authority’s strategic vision to develop institutional performance and apply operational excellence across all affiliated facilities, ensuring service quality, beneficiary satisfaction, and alignment with Egypt’s national objectives for a strong and sustainable healthcare system.
He explained that the accreditation of El Shifa Laboratory according to the new ISO 15189:2022 standard represents international recognition of its processes, including the entire sample journey from patient reception and collection to final reporting, along with compliance to ISO 15190:2020 for safety and occupational health. The accreditation also confirms the laboratory’s adherence to robust quality control programs, regular equipment calibration, internal and external quality assurance, staff competency assessments, structured organizational governance, continuous training, and comprehensive risk management following ISO 31000:2018 guidelines.
Dr. El-Sobky highlighted that the laboratory has provided over 2.5 million diagnostic tests since its inauguration, a testament to the trust placed by patients and clinicians in its services and the competence of its technical, medical, and administrative teams. He noted that this international recognition is the result of significant efforts and strict compliance with both technical and administrative requirements of global laboratory standards.
The Chairman further described El Shifa Laboratory as a central diagnostic hub within El Shifa Medical Complex, one of the largest facilities under the Comprehensive Health Insurance System, offering a wide range of services including biochemistry, hormones, tumor markers, parasitology, hematology, and bone marrow aspiration.
El Shifa Medical Complex itself is a comprehensive healthcare model, featuring 152 inpatient beds, 6 pharmacies, 10 outpatient clinics, and specialized departments for oncology surgery, orthopedics, endoscopy, hematology, internal medicine, critical care, and dialysis. It also houses advanced technologies such as the X1 system—the latest innovation in gastrointestinal endoscopy—making it a leading medical destination for Port Said residents and neighboring areas.
Since the launch of the Comprehensive Health Insurance System, the complex has delivered over 6 million medical services, underscoring its central role in enhancing healthcare quality in the governorate and reinforcing public trust in the Authority’s services.
In conclusion, Dr. El-Sobky commended the unwavering efforts of all laboratory staff and the teams involved in achieving this milestone. He affirmed the Authority’s commitment to expanding international accreditation across all its laboratories, in line with global standards, to elevate service quality and strengthen Egypt’s position on the regional and international healthcare excellence map.
