In a step that reflects Egypt’s commitment to integrating environmental sustainability standards into its mega-projects, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has announced the receipt of an internationally certified report measuring its carbon emissions for 2024. This makes it one of the first cultural institutions in the region to adopt this scientific approach to resource management.
The report followed a meticulous verification process conducted by the #Environmental_Verification_and_Attestation_Unit at the #General_Authority_for_Export_and_Import_Control (GOEIC), led by Engineer #Rahab_Ali_Sadek in collaboration with the Egyptian National Accreditation Council (EGAC).
Measuring the carbon footprint is a pivotal tool for understanding the volume of greenhouse gases emitted from various activities, such as energy consumption, transportation, and waste management. The goal is to establish practical strategies to reduce these emissions. In the case of the Grand Egyptian Museum – the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization – the report monitored emissions associated with the operation of the massive building and its advanced technical systems, in accordance with approved international standards.
Engineer #Essam_Al-Naggar, Chairman of the #General_Authority_for_Export_and_Import_Control (GOEIC), affirmed that this achievement would not have been possible without integrated national efforts and the utilization of scientific expertise, praising the prominent role played by the #Environmental_Verification_and_Attestation_Unit.
For his part, Engineer Hany El Desouki, Executive Director of the Egyptian National Accreditation Council (EGAC), explained that this cooperation reflects the ability of Egyptian institutions to keep pace with global practices in the field of environmental preservation. He indicated that integrating scientific dimensions into major cultural projects enhances Egypt’s value on the global sustainability map.
In the same context, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, Executive Director of the Grand Egyptian Museum, expressed his deep appreciation to all the entities that contributed to the preparation of the report. He confirmed that its results represent a starting point for a comprehensive plan to reduce the Museum’s carbon footprint by improving energy efficiency and resource management, in line with national directives and sustainable development goals.
